About
Biography
Pablo Rodríguez is a violinist, composer and improviser from La Palma in the Canary Islands, based in the Netherlands, active in jazz, flamenco and contemporary music. He has brought a strongly rhythmic language to the violin, with his own percussive and harmonic playing techniques, and has performed at prestigious festivals and concert halls across Europe and around the world.
His path began in classical training at the Escuela Insular de Música de La Palma, and at thirteen a Stéphane Grappelli record pulled him towards jazz. He studied with Alfredo García Serrano in Madrid and at Codarts Rotterdam, where he completed his classical violin studies with Andras Czifra and a master’s in Latin jazz focused on percussive language and techniques for the violin.
Along the way he has worked with Pat Metheny, Ambrose Akinmusire, Samora Pinderhughes, Antonio Lizana, Jorge Pardo, Carles Benavent, Oene van Geel, Tim Kliphuis, Trio Da Kali, José Manuel León, Lilian Vieira, Kike Perdomo, Javier Infante, Domingo “El Colorao”, Gordan Nikolić, Frankie Gavin, Gjermund Larsen and James Morrison.
He performs internationally with the North Sea String Quartet, Tijn Wybenga & Brainteaser Orchestra and the Marmoucha Orchestra, and in a long-standing duo with Cuban pianist Humberto Ríos. His compositions appear on recordings by the North Sea String Quartet, including the album ZONAR, and by HUMBE & Pablo Rodríguez. He recorded and arranged music for Antonio Lizana’s Carried by the Wind, and has performed at Nacht van de Viool with his solo electronic project.
He received the Best Soloist award at the Canaries Jazz Showroom 2019, and teaches improvisation to classical string players, including at the Academy for Improvising Strings.
